CNC Chair Design

I designed, modeled in CAD, and fabricated a chair built entirely from plywood sheets cut by a CNC.

This chair was initially meant to inhibit sleep. I was inspired by my own experience of dozing off in class as well as photographs of notable public figures asleep in their chairs. Stripped away of all unnecessary material, the chair would force the user to stay balanced, else tumble to the floor.

The chair is designed for few points of contact with the sitter’s body and incorporates special circular joint pieces to allow for non-perpendicular intersections between sheets of plywood.

Completed for 4.500 – Design Computation: Art, Objects, Space.
