The Underground

48 cm x 54 cm - Graphite on paper

In this drawing, I hoped to synthesize the imagery, ideas, and influences that I had worked with before. The juxtaposition of imagery, including roots and pipes but also subway stations names and ant colonies, reflects the complexity of the underground, a space which brings together many disparate elements. I chose to pencil in the negative space to create a feeling of darkness associated with the underground. The positive space, on the other hand, is shaded to create an illusion of depth.
