Métrographie: A Typographic Study of the Paris Métro Map

Geographically-accurate transit maps and schematic transit maps prioritize information differently. Geographic maps prioritize accuracy over legibility while schematic maps prioritize legibility over geographic accuracy. To design a schematic map, one must make decisions about what information is essential for understanding a transit system and what information can be left out. To better understand the process of schematization, I chose to compare one schematic and one geographic map of the Paris métro by creating two typefaces. Because we intuitively understand letters as more than just forms, they let us better assess legibility and information gain or loss. Completed for 4.053 - Visual Communication Fundamentals.
